Physics of Musical instruments

This sequence presents the operation of musical instruments from the point of view of physics. The instruments are decomposed into three sub-elements, transmitter, resonator, amplifier. The role of each element is presented and the operation of the resonator is analyzed more in details. The relationship between musical intervals (octave, fifth) and frequency intervals is also presented to make a link between music and acoustics.

The physical principle of the resonator is illustrated by experiments, animations and musical games using strings and tubes. The transmitter is mainly illustrated with videos made in laboratories. Finally, the effect of the amplifier is illustrated by experiments in real time.

All these demonstrations enable to understand the physical principles of the musical instruments used during the show and built with recovery materials.
